While your workplace may provide you tools or safety
equipment and some kind of protective gear, they cannot issue you a new set of
eyes. If something happens to your eyes, there is nothing that can fix your
eyes. Medical
science can replace a lot of things on and in your body, but when your eyes are
gone, they are gone forever.
Your eyes are very delicate and can easily get damaged. It’s not
necessary that only a hard blow will cause injury. In fact it could just take a
tiny sliver or speck of metal, a dust particle, or trace chemical to do great
damage.
OSHA rules establish minimum
standards for both employer and employee, and a portion of that standard
dealing with eye and face protection standards says:
“The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses eye or face
protection when exposed to eye or face
hazards from flying particles, molten metal’s, liquids, chemicals, acids or
caustic liquids, chemical Gases or vapors, or potentially injurious light
radiation.”
Be protective about your eyes while working. To have a pair of
prescription eyeglasses on hand is a good idea. If you wear contact lenses,
remember: a contact lens was not designed to provide eye protection. Use
prescription eyeglasses in case you need to remove your contact lenses.
