First-Aid for Eyes

To lessen the risk of permanent damage caused by eye injuries, it is important to treat eye injuries immediately. First aid, no matter how simple, can make the difference in saving your eyesight. A severe injury can lead to infection, vision loss, or blindness.

Using some of these simple first aid techniques may help save your sight:

Bleeding from the eye:  Trauma to the eye or head may cause bleeding of the eye. Gently apply small cold compresses without pressure immediately to reduce pain and swelling.

Chemical exposure in the eyes: If you are wearing contact lenses, remove them immediately. Keeping them in your eyes may hold the chemical against the cornea, causing unnecessary damage and pain.

Object in the eye: If you have an object in your eye, do not irritate your eye by rubbing it. You may try to remove the particle if it is not embedded in the eye. Do not try to remove an object that is embedded in the eye.

Cuts in or around the eye: If you have cuts in or around the eyes then bandage the eyes gently. Do not rub the eye or apply the pressure.

Eyes are very essential for everyone’s life. Your eyes are the windows to the world, but negligence and improper care can take a toll on your eyesight.
