Vitreous Body

The vitreous body takes up most of the eye and gives the eye its shape. It is the space between the lens and the retina and it is filled with vitreous humor, which is a clear jelly.

Vitreous gel is a special, spherical shape in the eye cavity. The vitreous body is mainly composed of water (99%), and the remaining (1%) consisted of two components: collagen and hyaluronic acid (hyaluronic acid).

Vitreous body functions are

·      To maintain eye shape,
·      To maintain the high degree of transparency of the eye cavity
·      To act as a cushion to decrease the external shocks on the retina
·      It plays an important role in the exchange and Metabolism within the eye
