Eye Problems and Blood in the Eye

Subconjunctival Hemorrhage is when small blood vessels in the whites of the eyes break and cause a red spot or speck. The blood vessels may break because of sneezing, coughing, vomiting, straining, or bending over, but sometimes there is no clear cause.

This is usually not a serious problem if your vision is normal, there is no eye pain, and the bleeding does not cover a large portion of the white of the eye and does not spread into the colored part of the eye (iris).

Although its appearance may be alarming, in general a subconjunctival hemorrhage is a painless and harmless condition; however, it may be associated with high blood pressure, trauma to the eye, or a base of skull fracture if there is no posterior border of the hemorrhage visible.

For more details about subconjunctival hemorrhage you can read the original article published on Eyeryday Health by Healthwise Staff. Do keep in mind that this information does not replace the advice of a doctor.

Your vision is priceless and a thirty minute appointment once a year is certainly something you should be able to commit to. Getting your eyes tested regularly will help you stay on top of your general health and eye diseases.
