Sunburn and Eye Pain

Eye pain or vision problems after being in the sun can be serious.  Symptoms of vision problems from sun exposure may include:

·      Partial or complete vision loss.
·      Burning pain.
·      A feeling that something is in your eye (foreign body sensation).
·      Decreased vision.
·      Photophobia.

The eyes are very sensitive to sunlight. Sun burning your eyes can cause damage to the light-sensitive membrane that covers the inside of the eyeball (retina) or damage to the lens (which can eventually cause cataracts).

You might also have pain, more tearing, and a gritty feeling in your eyes if they have been sunburned. These symptoms usually begin several hours after being in the sun. If these symptoms do not go away, an evaluation by a doctor is needed.

Sunglasses that block 99% or 100% of ultraviolet rays can protect you from eye problems related to sun exposure. Sunglass labels that say UV absorption up to 400 nanometers (nm) provide 100% UV protection.

New Prosthetic to Help Restore Vision

People with degenerative eye diseases might someday see the world in a new light as researchers at Stanford University have invented a new type of prosthetic implant that could send visual inputs to the brain.

The wireless prosthetic works on near-infrared light to transmit signals. The device works like video goggles for gaming but here the signal pulses are beamed to a photovoltaic silicon chip placed beneath the retina.

The wearer would have a small camera in the goggles plus a pocket PC to process the visual data.
“It works like the solar panels on your roof, converting light into electric current. But instead of the current flowing to your refrigerator, it flows into your retina,” said Daniel Palanker, associate professor of ophthalmology and lead author of the study.

For more details you can read the original article published on medicaldaily.com on May 14, 2012.

According to National Eye Institute, Age-Related Macular Degeneration is a common eye condition among people age 50 or older. It is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. It gradually destroys the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed for seeing objects clearly.

The prosthetic will help people with AMD as well as retinitis pigmentosa - an eye disease where the retina is damaged. This condition is genetic and is uncommon in US with only one among 4000 people suffering from the disease.

However, AMD is far more prevalent. According to estimates, by 2020, U.S. will have about 2.90 million people with AMD.

Eye Vision Health

They're small, but when it comes to power, the eyes have it: 2 million working parts that process 36,000 bits of info per hour. Our eyes allow us to see and they reflect how we feel, so it's vital they stay healthy. While some vision glitches, such as nearsightedness, are inevitable, others (eyestrain or glaucoma, for example) are preventable.

Here are few tips to help you keep your eyes healthy:
2.    Take Screen Breaks
3.    Get Regular Eye Exams

For more details you can read the original article on sharecare.com.

Eyes have a nifty defense system: lids that close, lashes that trap dust and dirt, and tears that wash away foreign matter that gets in anyway. Even so, eyes can get irritated or infected. Following basic hygiene rules will help prevent peeper problems, but when they crop up anyway, the fixes are usually straightforward.

Vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (trouble reading up close) are generally pretty innocuous and easily handled with eyeglasses, contact lenses and even surgery.

Vision screening is especially important for children and adults too, as it can detect eye problems that are commonly occurring. Early detection can help fix these issues. The most commonly used method is visual acuity which is used to evaluate eyesight. Each eye is tested individually and then both eyes are screened at the same time.

The best possible vision screening result is 20/20. We advise our clients that already wear contacts or glasses to wear them during their vision screening.

Don’t forget to call 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore® to make an appointment for your free vision screening at any of our three locations in Florida.

Eyelash Extentions Can Cause A Bevy Of Health Issues, Warns Consumer Reports

Enhancing the length of eyelids has become a coveted beauty trend among women in the United States. Unfortunately, most women don't recognize the unhealthy benefits of this cosmetic decision.

Eyelash extensions have been around longer than any of us, standing as a sign of beauty and wealth.  A recent article published by Consumer Reports shed light on the risky effects of eyelash extension,

Screen and stage actress Kristen Chenoweth went on the Late Show with David Letterman and expressed her concerns about the procedure she had just undergone.

"Something bad has happened.  I’ve got eyelash extensions.”  Chenoweth said, "I swelled up and I'm sneezing. . . . It looks like I have lips on my eyelids."

A statement released on Thursday by the American Academy of Ophthalmology revealed the specific perils of eyelash extension due to the adhesive used in extending procedures. Some of the notable side effects include infection of the cornea and eyelid, swelling of the eyelid, and permanent or temporary loss of eyelashes.

Eye Floaters

Seeing spots or floaters in your eyes for the first time can be disconcerting and even a little alarming.

Though most of the floaters are normal, some can be a sign of underlying problems that youshould address with your eye doctor.

Eye floaters appear as little irregularities that drift slowly across your field of vision. Floaters often look like:

·      Little darkish spots or specks,
·      Threads or strings, or
·      Fragments of cobwebs

Floaters in the eye aren’t optical illusions. They’re little bits of debris floating around in your vitreous: the jelly-like filling of your eyeball that helps keep its shape. Sometimes, as these floaters move around, they cast shadows on your retina. This is what you see.

You can read more about this in the original article on coopervision.com.

Most of the time, age-related changes in your vitreous are the cause of eye floaters. As your eyes get older, the vitreous jelly deteriorates: it becomes more liquid, starts to sag and pull away from the inside of your eyeball.

Floaters can also occur when the vitreous detaches from the surface of your retina. The stimulation of the retina during this process will often cause flashes in the eye.

Eye floaters and flashes in the eye are an urgent matter for your eye doctor, especially if they appear suddenly. They often signal retinal detachments, which could cause blindness.

You should always mention any vision changes or eye problems, whether floaters or something else, to your eye doctor during your regular exams. Floaters are occasionally only visible during eye exams, especially if they are close to your retina.

Your vision is extremely important. Poor vision habits can result in eye deterioration or even blindness.  We look forward to becoming your number one source for all your eye care and eye fashion needs.
