Avastin® used to slow vision loss in AMD

The following is an extract from an article on What is Avastin®? approved by The Eye M.D. Association published on eyeSmart®.

Avastin® is the brand name for bevacizumab, a drug injected into the eye to slow vision loss in people who have “wet” age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Avastin is part of a class of drugs that block the growth of abnormal blood vessels, which is the cause of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Avastin is also used in some cases to treat macular edema, or swelling of the macula, often associated with diabetic retinopathy.

Avastin was initially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for different types of cancer. Its use to treat eye disease is considered an “off-label” use.

It is possible to have two or more types of refractive error at the same time.

Myopia is also knows as nearsightedness. Close objects look clear, but distant objects appear blurred to the person who has this disorder.

Tips for Eye Cosmetic Safety

Mascara and eye shadow may enhance your appearance, but eye cosmetics can easily harm your vision. Adopting these eye makeup safety tips will help keep your eyes pretty and healthy.

Want to make your eyes a bit more dramatic? Mascara, eye shadow, and eyeliner can certainly do the trick. But if putting on eye cosmetics is part of your daily ritual, you should know about some potential dangers to your eyes. In fact, being just as diligent about removing eye makeup at night is more important than applying them each morning.

Eye cosmetics are generally safe materials if you are using properly and carefully. Many kinds of bacteria andfungi grow in those pretty little cosmetic packages. And if you are using that makeup to decorate your eyes, then those germs go directly into your eyes.

Here are some dos and don’ts to help you keep your eyes safe.
·      Don’t hold on to your old make up for a long time.
·      Don’t use dried out mascara.
·      Keep your cosmetics in cool place.
·      Never share your cosmetics with anyone, not even with your friends or family members.
·      Don’t use eye makeup when you have any kind of eye irritation or infection.
·      Try to avoid eye cosmetics that are shiny, glittery or iridescent, as they can scratch or irritate the eye.
·      Make sure that all your applicators are clean before using them.

For more instructions you can read the original article on Everydayhealth.com

Makeup can cause a lot of problems for your eyes — especially if you wear contact lenses. Eyes can become dry and irritated, and cosmetics can leave deposits on your lenses, affecting your vision and the comfort of your lenses.

It is important to be gentle when you remove your eye cosmetics, as the eyes and skin surrounding them are very sensitive. It’s also very important to carefully and gently wash off your eye makeup each night before bed to make sure that your cosmetics don't work their way into your eyes, build up, and cause damage.

Smoking and Eye Health

Did you know that smoking is not only bad for your lungs, but also for your eyes and vision? There are many factors which can affect your eye health, and smoking is one of them. People usually think that smoking only affects their lungs, but they don‘t realize that it can also affect their vision, specifically, poor night vision and aggravation of diabetes which in turn to could lead to blindness.

Pregnant mothers who smoke put their child at risk for a potentially blinding disease called Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Avoiding smoking, or quitting, is one of the best investments you can make in your long-term eye health.

To read the original article by The Eye M.D. Association click here.

Our eyes play a very important role in human life. So, consider quitting smoking before you suffer from a serious eye problem or disease.
Smoking – even in your teens or twenties when your senior years seem far away – increases your future risks for cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). And the more a person smokes, the higher the risks. The good news is that after people quit smoking, their risks for these eye diseases become almost as low as for people who never smoked.
Smoking increases the risk of serious vision loss in people with other eye diseases.

Vision screening is important for all adults and children as it can detect eye problems early on. Early detection can help fix these issues before they become serious.

Your vision is priceless and a thirty minute appointment once a year is something you should be able to commit to. Drop in at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore in Florida for your eye screening. Regular vision testing will help you stay on top of your eye health as well as your general health.
