Flaxseed Oil and Fish Oil To Relieve Dry Eye

According to an article by Gary Heiting, OD published on All About Vision, flaxseed oil and fish oil contain important dietary fatty acids that have multiple health benefits, including prevention or control of dry eyes.

Fatty acids may reduce the risk of maculardegeneration and cataracts it has proved by research.

Daily supplements of flaxseed oil or fish oil, when used alone or in tandem with lubricating eye drops, appear to reduce dry eye symptoms, including burning, stinging, redness and intermittent visual disturbances. For this reason, many eye doctors now are recommending flaxseed oil and fish oil supplements for their patients who suffer from dry eyes.

Are you one of the many Americans who skip getting routine eye exams each year? Having a comprehensive eye examination on an annual basis is crucial to maintaining proper eye health and can find eye conditions such as glaucoma.  Routine eye exams also can also detect other underlying conditions.  Your optometrist will perform several tests during your eye exam that test and check your vision.  These tests are completely painless.

If you haven’t had an eye exam in the last year, make sure you drop into one of our convenient locations to make an appointment or you can contact 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore online.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Unborn Babies Need Light in Womb to Develop Healthy Eyes

According to new research in an article by Christine Hsu published in January 2013 on Medical daily, it is essential for unborn babies to be exposed to light in the womb in order to develop healthy eyes.

A new study on mice found that the eyes also need light for healthy development during pregnancy.

 After experimenting on mouse models, researchers from the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco, found that the activation of the newly described light-response pathway happens during pregnancy to activate the developmental process that produces a healthy eye.

Scientists say that the finding, published in the journal Nature, offers a new basic understanding of fetal eye development and eye diseases caused by vascular disorders such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) that can blind premature infants.

Scientists explained that because several stages of eye development occur after birth, it was always assumed that the role light played in the development of the eye would also happen only after birth.
By getting your eyes checked regularly, you’ll be able to keep them healthy your whole life. Neglect can be costly! Click here to schedule an eye exam at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore Florida.

Eye Problems and Blood in the Eye

Subconjunctival Hemorrhage is when small blood vessels in the whites of the eyes break and cause a red spot or speck. The blood vessels may break because of sneezing, coughing, vomiting, straining, or bending over, but sometimes there is no clear cause.

This is usually not a serious problem if your vision is normal, there is no eye pain, and the bleeding does not cover a large portion of the white of the eye and does not spread into the colored part of the eye (iris).

Although its appearance may be alarming, in general a subconjunctival hemorrhage is a painless and harmless condition; however, it may be associated with high blood pressure, trauma to the eye, or a base of skull fracture if there is no posterior border of the hemorrhage visible.

For more details about subconjunctival hemorrhage you can read the original article published on Eyeryday Health by Healthwise Staff. Do keep in mind that this information does not replace the advice of a doctor.

Your vision is priceless and a thirty minute appointment once a year is certainly something you should be able to commit to. Getting your eyes tested regularly will help you stay on top of your general health and eye diseases.

Video Games Affect The Eyesight Of Children!

There is an interesting debate on whether video games affect your eyesight at www.debate.org/opinions/do-video-games-affect-your-eyesight.  100% of those who responded said “Yes, video games do affect your eyesight”. You can add your thoughts and comments, or follow the original debate at the above link. Following are some of the reasons people shared:

If you play video games in moderation it can actually help sharpen your eye movement skills, eye-hand coordination, visual reaction time, visualization, and side vision awareness. However, video games and any other object you focus on for too long can affect your eyesight in a negative way. It can put the eyes under great stress.

Any activity that requires a high amount of focus on the part of your eyes is probably not the healthiest for them. This probably depends on how long you spend doing the activity though. Playing for a short period does not negatively impact your eyesight as much as playing for a very long period of time.

We are not saying that don’t play video games, but too much spending time in playing video games on the computer screen or TV can affect your eyesight. Your eyes get very tired and strained and pretty soon they start to water and itch.

Drop into your nearest 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore for all your child’s eye care needs. We have a frame for every face and a price for any budget. Important Things to Know About Contact Lenses

The following is an extract from an article by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, published on www.geteyesmart.org.  For more details, please read the original article here.

Lenses that are not properly cleaned and disinfected increase the risk of eye infection. Any lens that is removed from the eye needs to be cleaned and disinfected before it is reinserted.

Care of contact lenses includes cleaning their case, since it is a potential source of infection. The case should be rinsed with contact lens solution and allowed to dry.

Lenses that are old or not properly fitted may scratch the eye or cause blood vessels to grow into the cornea.
You may not be a good candidate for contacts if you have:
  • Frequent eye infections;
  • Severe allergies;
  • Dry eye that is resistant to treatment;
  • A very dusty work environment; or
  • An inability to handle and care for the lenses.
Any eye drops you use can interact with all types of contact lenses. It is best to avoid the use of eye drops while wearing lenses, except for wetting drops recommended by your eye doctor.
Here at 20/20 Eyeglass Superstore, we’re in the business of connecting customers with the perfect pair of eyeglasses, sunglasses and/or contact lenses. Additionally, we love teaching people about proper eye care. You can schedule an eye exam with our Independent Optometrist.
